Our little Picasso

One of the best purchases we've made was a pass to the San Jose Children's Discovery Museum. Maya visits two or three times a week and absolutely loves the place. They have a section especially for 4 and under kids with lots of stuff for her to play with. As soon as she enters she runs straight for her favorite activities.

Lately I've been taking her in to do art projects and she's pretty good at sitting and doing the activity.

Since she doesn't go to child care, we've been trying to make sure she is around other kids in order to learn at least a few social skills (unlike her old man).

Today we went out to Oak Meadows Park which has some nice play areas for little kids.

Maya got to Swing...

But she really loved the slide (I liked it a little myself)...

Trip to the zoo

We took Maya to the Oakland Zoo this weekend. The last time we went to the zoo (about 6 months ago), she didn't really care and we were interested to see if she would enjoy seeing the animals this time.

Nope, still didn't care.

She seemed to not even notice them. The only ones she seemed to really notice were the flamingos, I think becaus ethey move around so much as a flock so they caught her eye.

The lion and elephants and crocodile didn't even register.

We took her to pet the goats, but she wasn't too interested, partly because there were a bunch of bigger kids (the human kind) running around crowding her out. I thought she'd like them because she loves looking at the dogs who run around our apartment complex and occasionally tries to pet them.

She did like the big frog

Of course, being a Haynes, here's her favorite part of the trip:

Maya Eats with a Spoon

We haven't done much blog-worthy lately and I've been lazy with the camera so here's a movie of Maya eating.

This is the first time we've given her both the spoon and the bowl and much to our surprise she did pretty good with it. I put just a little applesauce in, and she was able to scrape some up and get it to her mouth!

I really need to learn to turn off the fan before tuning on the video camera, it sure comes across loud.

4th of July 2008

This weekend we went to the 4th of July Festival and fireworks in San Jose.

We took the light rail down which was a huge mistake since after the fireworks everyone rushed to the station to take the train home and it wasn't much fun trying to get a stroller and squirming baby on a packed train. Next year we drive and pay for parking!

4th of July 2008

The festival was pretty good, we got our favorite smoothies that they seem to have at every festival around here and some pork on a stick which is always good.

The festival started getting really crowded in the evening, but we had a good spot to hang out and Maya ran around and danced to the music.

When the fireworks started we figured out why we had such a good spot to sit, you couldn't see the fireworks from where we were. So we moved as best we could but the place was completely packed. We were able to see the fireworks through the trees though. Unfortunately, Maya was not a fireworks fan. She freaked out a little and cried when there were big explosions. So we didn't see much of the fireworks after all.

13 Months

On Monday Maya turned 13 months old. She's now pretty solid on her walking and is pretty much on the move day and night. She's doing more sounds, but still no words. She's now repeating sounds on demand though and will make certain sounds in context. When she see's the monkey in her favorite book, she imitates the monkey sound I always make.

She had her first visit to the dentist last week, they just looked in her mouth and declared her just fine. They even gave us a baby tooth brush. She's still at 6 teeth with no more in sight.

She's starting to love music and now attempts to dance when we turn it on. Her dancing mostly consists of shaking her head back and forth really hard. She's already more graceful than her pop.

She's gotten a little more picky with eating. She still loves her corn and chicken though. And she loves her string cheese!

Here's some recent pics:
